Socket Awarded Third US Patent for Bar Code Scanning Combined With Removable Memory in a Single Expansion Adapter
British Patent Granted for I/O and memory, Patents further expand portfolio and are applicable to many mobile devices
Newark, CA– 2/23/2004 — Socket Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCKT, PSE: SOK), the Mobile Connection™ Company, today announced the award of a third U.S. Patent, 6,691,196, covering Socket’s design for combining bar code scanning I/O and removable memory expansion solutions. Additionally, Socket has been granted a British Patent - 2365182, for a high-density removable expansion module with I/O and second-level removable expansion functions, extending the company’s IP position internationally.
Socket’s patents in the area of I/O plus removable memory are applicable to mobile devices that combine removable memory in a removable input/output device including plug-in cards, plug-on modules, sleeves and jackets for handheld computers and other mobile devices. The company has already implemented I/O plus removable memory technology in a proprietary CompactFlash and PC Card interface ASIC chip, which is available for sale. Socket’s patents in the removable-removable technology arena are continued recognition of the company’s pioneering work.
The combination of bar code scanning and removable memory on a single expansion adapter enables mobile professionals to read bar codes on devices such as a Pocket PC, and to store the collected data on removable memory such as CompactFlash, Secure Digital or MultiMediaCards. The removable memory can be used for storing scanned data, inventory databases, email attachments, important documents, or even MP3 files.
“Combination removable memory plus bar code scanning I/O cards or expansion jackets enable the use of removable memory and a bar code scanner in a single housing at the same time,” said Mike Gifford, Socket’s founder, executive vice president, and co-inventor of the patented technology. “We believe
this technology enhances the ease-of-use and functionality of expansion for handheld computers and other small devices, particularly those with single input slots or jackets.”
Potential licensing partners or those interested in purchasing Socket’s combination interface ASIC chip should contact Les Lee, director of sales for Socket Communications. Mr. Lee can be reached at 510/744-2781. To find out more about Socket’s mobilityIC IO + Memory interface technology, visit www.socketcom.com/embedded/asics.asp.
